Our History

The Mater Hospital was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1852. In 1861, the hospital officially opened its doors, providing the best in medical care to all those who needed it - irrespective of their means. This philosophy and mission continues to this day.

NCHDS Postgrad Historical Timeline

The Mater Hospital is the designated national centre for: Cardiac Surgery; Heart and Lung Transplantation; Spinal Injuries Centre; Pulmonary Hypertension; Extra Corporeal Life Support; the National Isolation Unit, and Bone Anchored Hearing Aid implantation.

All of this is reflected in the great strides the hospital has made and continues to make in providing excellent care and patient services, as well as high-quality medical and surgical education in association with the largest university in Ireland, University College Dublin.

The recent awarding of the Mater as a Major Trauma Centre (MTC) for the national Central region is a huge endorsement of the unique culture that exists in the Mater which has underpinned our innovative approach to develop and deliver the most acute care nationally.

The ethos of the Hospital is focused on compassion, dignity, and kindness as well as excellence, accountability and professionalism. These are all integral to all that our staff does for the benefit of our patients, their families and for each other.

Quote from Mary McAleese, Former President of Ireland

“The foundations of the Mater Hospital are not bricks and mortar but values – enduring, unchanging values summarised in the word love...a love expressed in compassion, concern, selflessness and care.” – 21 Jan 2011
